CostOptimizer

Azure cost optimization

Find the waste in Azure. Approve the fix.

CostOptimizer connects to your Azure estate, analyses cost and utilization together, puts a number on every saving and, with your approval, makes the change for you.

Azure Advisor tells you something might be wrong. CostOptimizer tells you what it is worth and fixes it.

Cost Management shows what you spent, not what you wasted. CostOptimizer answers the question nobody can answer without a spreadsheet: what are our top savings opportunities, worth how much, and who owns them? Then it closes the gap between the person who sees the waste and the person who can act on it.

What CostOptimizer finds

Quantified, defensible savings across your estate

Every finding carries its monthly saving, the evidence it rests on and how confident the analysis is. A recommendation that cannot be proven safe is not made.

Idle and oversized virtual machines

Processor, memory and network are analysed together over a time window you choose. A machine is only offered a smaller size when every hard constraint is proven: architecture, generation, security settings, disk controller, disk count, regional availability and vCPU quota.

Burstable-aware sizing

B-series sizes are judged by replaying your real hourly demand through the target size’s credit bank, so a machine is never moved onto a size that would throttle it.

Orphaned resources

Unattached managed disks, unassociated public IPs, stale snapshots and machines that have been switched off for months, each priced from its own line on your bill.

Reservations and savings plans

Coverage of your compute spend, under-used and expiring commitments, and purchase recommendations for one and three years, computed on the spend that remains after rightsizing.

Azure Hybrid Benefit

Windows Server machines that pay a licence you may already own. Applying the benefit needs no restart and is reversed by setting the licence back.

Savings measured on your bill

Every saving is quoted and later measured on your own Azure billing data, month by month, so you see what an executed change actually saved rather than a modelled estimate.

How it works

From connection to measured savings

The assessment stands on its own. Acting on it is a separate, explicit step you control.

  1. 1

    Connect

Your Azure administrator consents to our application and grants Reader and Cost Management Reader in one guided session. No script, no app registration and no secret to rotate.

  2. 2

    Review findings

CostOptimizer collects cost, inventory and utilization on a schedule and turns them into quantified findings, ranked by money and backed by evidence.

  3. 3

    Approve

A person you authorise approves a specific change. It runs inside your maintenance window, is re-verified against Azure right before it runs, and can be put back with one click.

  4. 4

    Measure

After the change, the saving is measured on your bill and the machine is watched for strain, so a size that turns out too small is flagged straight away.

One data set, three views

Built for everyone who answers for Azure spend

Each role sees the same figures, led by what matters to them, so two people never leave a meeting quoting different totals.

FinOps & cost analysts

Waste by category, projected annual savings and the spend trend, with a findings explorer you can filter and share.

Platform & cloud engineers

A resource-level work queue: which machine, what change, what it saves, and the utilization evidence behind it.

Engineering leadership

An executive summary with savings as a share of analysed spend and the savings actually realised over time.

Security & control

Built for a security review, not around it

CostOptimizer asks for the least access it needs and never more than the step you are taking.

  • Read-only by default: the analysis needs only Reader and Cost Management Reader
  • Write access is requested per subscription, only when the first change there is approved
  • A custom Azure role with four non-destructive operations, no broad Contributor rights
  • CostOptimizer never deletes anything: deletions stay with you in the Azure Portal
  • Nothing runs without an explicit approval, and every change has a rollback
  • Sign-in with Microsoft Entra ID, role-based views and a tamper-evident audit log
  • Strict tenant isolation in the database, enforced on every query

FAQ

Questions we hear often

Which clouds does CostOptimizer support?

Microsoft Azure only. CostOptimizer is built for Azure enterprises and goes deep on Azure rather than wide across clouds.

Can I use CostOptimizer without giving it write access?

Yes. The full assessment needs only read access. Write access is requested separately for each subscription, and only at the moment you approve the first change there. If you never grant it, you still get every finding with its saving and evidence.

What changes can CostOptimizer make?

Three reversible changes: stop an idle virtual machine, resize an oversized one, and apply a Windows Server licence you already own (Azure Hybrid Benefit). It deletes nothing. Findings such as unattached disks link straight to the resource in the Azure Portal, so the deletion stays in your hands.

Do changes run automatically?

Only if you want them to. By default every change needs its own approval. A person with the approval permission can switch individual machines to automatic mode; their changes then run in your maintenance windows without a click per change. There is an organization-wide pause, and licence changes always need an individual approval.

How are savings calculated?

From your own Azure bill. A finding is quoted on your billed hours and rates, and after a change runs the saving is measured on the same basis, month by month. Commitments you already pay for are taken into account, so a reservation is never counted twice.

How is CostOptimizer priced?

You pay a share of the savings CostOptimizer actually achieves through changes it executed, measured on your Azure bill. The terms are agreed with you when you order and are shown in the approval dialog before any billable change is approved.
